The Iconic Daryaganj Sunday Market Now Has A New Address

     0

On July 26, many book lovers mourned the loss of heading out to the iconic Daryaganj market on a Sunday morning. An unforgettable way to spend the weekend, you could spend hours sniffing the musty air of second-hand books that were available at throwaway prices. But fret not, because now there is some good news for these book-lovers. After a break of two months, the iconic market is back to life and has found a new address near Asaf Ali Road, at the Mahila Haat in Chandini Chowk.

The market had been forced to shut down last month after a Delhi high court order declared Netaji Subhash Marg to be a ‘no vending’ zone following complaints of traffic congestion in the area by the Delhi police. More than 297 vendors had protested the move, and social media was abuzz with sad reactions of book lovers from around the city.

The old Daryaganj market was touted as a ‘book-lover’s  paradise’ with books ranging from Mahatma Gandhi’s autobiography to the latest edition of Harry Potter being available at affordable prices. That’s not all – shops like Mukta Book agency and Big Book Bazar sold books by the kilo, and used academic textbooks were sold at low prices for students who flocked there from Ambedkar University, Jamia Milia Islamia, JNU and the University of Delhi. For some parents who sought to buy books for their children and acquire a great deal on them, this market was a weekly haunt.

Today, after much running around by these book sellers got the required permission to open their shops at the new location and many of them have welcomed the move by the NDMC. In fact, the newly opened book bazaar opened to customers on September 15, 2019. Have you been there yet?
