Meat, Spice & Everything Nice: Best North-Eastern Food in Delhi

We’re all momo fiends in Delhi {regardless of what certain politicians may preach}, and whereas it’s one of the most glorious foods to have made it to the Delhi streets, there’s so much more to North Eastern cuisine. And lucky for you, even if you don’t have the time or money to travel, you can get a taste of the loot right in your city. Head to these restaurants for the best authentic north-eastern meals in Delhi.

1. The Categorical Eat Pham

The Categorical Eat Pham - Live More Zone

Bright and sunny interiors paired with an all-you-can-eat Manipuri buffet (only on weekends) at a mere Rs 350 per person, The Categorical Eat Pham is winning in most aspects. Their menu is a wonderful mix of curries, dals, pork (of course) with some not so mainstream fare like ducks, river snail, and fish gizzards. There’s also rice beer and local teas to wash down your meal.

Seven Sisters is a relatively new kid in town (in Munirka), but they’re fast gaining popularity amongst the carnivores. They have a small dining area, so it’s better to order takeaway. Chef’s special fried pork ribs, boiled vegetables, fish chutney, honey chili lotus stem, and a chilled glass of fruit beer.

Nagaland’s Kitchen - Live More Zone

One of the oldest restaurants dishing out food from the North East, Nagaland’s Kitchen in Green Park is responsible for getting us addicted to fried pork ribs. They charge extra for their chutneys, but it’s well worth it, especially the raja mircha one.

Pair your spicy meal with a beer, and you’re good to go. The restaurant itself is small but clean and cozy and not a bad spot for a date if you can look past the dilapidated market, where it is located.

5. Bamboo Hut

Bamboo Hut - Live More Zone

This restaurant is a bamboo hut and a super cute one at that. Located in Safdarjung, it specializes in Naga and Tibetan food. Unsurprisingly, it’s the pork dishes that pull in a crowd. Slow-cooked pork with yam leaves is a popular choice as are the chicken and fish with raja mircha. The thalis, however, are the best bet here, so go with a big appetite. They have traditional Naga thalis which comprise a meat curry, rice, dal, chutney, boiled veggies, and a glass of iced tea.

6. Mizo Diner

Mizo Diner - Live More Zone

One of the rare few North Eastern joints which have mostly steered clear of the typical Indian Chinese, Mizo Diner in Safdarjung is a no-frills restaurant, but its food speaks for itself. Whereas it’s a good idea to order from here, it would lead to missing out on their traditional rice beer.

Whereas it’s always a good idea to go with the thali in these places so you get a sense of multiple dishes, their chicken stir fry deserves a special mention. As does the rice porridge and the meat with taro leaves and Mizo spices.
