Here Is Why Social Distancing Matters

You are living under a rock if you don’t know about CoVID-19 or the Coronavirus pandemic that has slowed down the whole world. Declared an epidemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020, Coronavirus is a new kind of virus that was reportedly found in a patient in Wuhan back in December 2019. 

Thanks to initial negligence, the virus has spread across the globe, and numerous cases are being reported every single day. The virus is said to cause respiratory problems with initial symptoms noted as dry cough, fever, and tiredness. In worse cases, it even leads to difficulty in breathing and, ultimately, organ failure, which has caused the death of over 5,000 people all over the world. 

The gravity of this pandemic has caused a global shutdown at all levels in India. Schools, colleges, and even corporate offices have been asked to remain shut to slow down the spread of the virus as it can be passed on with close contact with an infected person. In this stressful time, everyone is doing their bit by social distancing or self-isolation. And if you are still not aware of what social distancing is and why it matters, we have you covered. It matters because remaining indoors and avoiding contact with people will stop the spread of the virus. Even if you have a healthy immune system, you can be a carrier of the disease and pass it on to vulnerable people. Thus, practicing social distancing is not only in your best interest but the society at large. 

What Is Social Distancing?

After Italy went in lockdown, people elsewhere took the virus seriously, and the cries of social distancing emerged all over the internet. But what is it? Social distancing is all about staying away from crowded places, avoiding physical contact so that you can limit the spread of the virus. And in a vastly connected world like ours, this is possible only when we define our existence to our home. The idea behind this is to curtail transmission further and stop the spread of the pandemic before it goes out of control. 

When Do You Practice Social Distancing?

There is no timeframe for practicing social distancing. It is an all-day process, and it mandates you to stay at home, clean all the places you frequently use and take care of your health. If you are living with people who are more vulnerable to the virus, it is advisable to ensure they are taken care of and tested immediately if they show any symptoms. People above 60 years in age and children below ten years are the most susceptible to the virus. Even in the demographic of people between 10 to 60 years old, people who have a weaker immune system or have heart or lung conditions are more likely to catch the virus. 

Ensure you are there for your loved ones. In the time of social distancing, emotionally being available for your friends and family is necessary; otherwise, it would lead to loneliness and depression in times as grave as these. 

How Do You Practice Social Distancing?

Now that we have answered the question of what and when, let us focus on the most important of it all – how. The number one rule right now is to avoid physical contact with other people. And while you cannot isolate yourself from your peers and family, it is necessary to avoid places with large gatherings like shopping malls, events, concerts, markets, bars, and restaurants. Adequate measures have been taken in this regard by our government itself as they have enforced the shutdown of malls, movie halls, schools, and colleges. Even for corporate offices, work from home has become the norm at least till 31st March 2020. You just have to stay indoors and wait for the virus to slow down. 

Work from home and conduct virtual meetings with your colleagues. Everything can happen over the internet, including food deliveries – just pay online and get everything that you crave, right to your doorstep.

Secondly, you should cancel all non-essential travel. This includes not just overseas trip/business trips but also a quick run to the market. Maintain a distance of 1-3 meter with people at all times, if possible. 

In the case of you being tested positive for CoVid-19 or if you have come into contact with someone who has been recovering from the disease, it is advisable to go in self-isolation to ensure you don’t pass it on to anyone else. 

In the end, even if you feel you have a healthy immune system, it is advisable to keep in mind others who might not enjoy the same health. Think about everyone because we will survive this. And to come on the other side, we can only do it as a community, not a single entity. Stay safe, wash your hands regularly, and be mindful of others. We have got this!
