No More Deep Frying – These Healthy Dishes Can Be Made In An Air Fryer


So many of us kitchen noobs have now had to take those dreaded few steps into the kitchen and don the chef’s hat because, hello, lockdown. If you’re anything like me, you’d also want to stay as far from a wok full of bubbling hot oil not only because all deep-fried snacks are unhealthy but also thanks to the fear of having never fried anything before.

So, after consulting my mum, I tried three recipes in the air fryer, which worked like a charm! Here, we spill the beans {and the sass}.

Bread Pizza

This is my go-to quarantine dinner on a lot of days and having an air fryer helps. All I do is, take slices of bread and slather them with a store-bought pizza sauce (if you don’t have it, some ketchup, chili sauce, and ground garlic mix should be good).

Then, I throw in whatever I have in the fridge, including chopped onion, capsicum, sweet corn, crumbled paneer, and some grated mozzarella cheese, of course. Post this, it is just brushing some butter or olive oil on the bread slices before putting them in the tray for about 15-20mins.


The trick here is to keep the batter thick enough, so it doesn’t get drippy (I only use one tablespoon of water) when you put your potatoes, palak, onions, and other things. Remember to also line the air fryer tray with aluminum foil that’s coated with oil, so when you drop dollops of pakora batter, it doesn’t stick to the foil when done.

For best results, preheat the air fryer for 10 minutes and let the pakoras stay in for at least 20 minutes.

Crispy Bhindi

Much like the pakoras, it’s relatively simple to make air fried, healthy okra too. All you need to do is take a little besan in a bowl (enough to just dust the bhindis). Now, add salt, turmeric, amchur (dry mango powder), ground roasted jeera powder, chili powder, and maybe a little chat masala and mix all the dry powders with the besan.

I also throw in a tablespoon of mustard oil, so the besan mix sticks to the bhindi (I like to cut all the okra length-wise). After you’ve preheated the air fryer for 10 mins, place all the bhindis on the tray, keeping some distance between them, so they’re evenly done. Check after 15 minutes to see and wait or eat according to how crispy you want it.
