5 Hot Chocolate Recipes That No One Will Be Able To Resist

We love to spend our weekends going to parties and exploring the city. But sometimes we would like to kick back our heels and stay indoors. And, if you’ve decided to avoid the great outdoors, you’ll need the essential supplies: a warm blanket, something good on Netflix, and a mug of hot chocolate. The sweet drink warms you inside and out, making it the perfect indulgent treat for literally any day of the week.

So read ahead, because we have collected some of our favorite hot chocolate recipes. With quite a few variations, you’ll have plenty of ways to stay warm until the end of the weekend.

Classic Hot Cocoa

Because nothing beats the original

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons sugar (depending on how sweet you like it)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 cup milk or any combination of milk, half-and-half, or cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

  1. Whisk together the cocoa, sugar, salt, and about two tablespoons milk in a small saucepan over medium-low heat until cocoa and sugar are dissolved. Whisk in the rest of the milk and heat it over medium heat, occasionally whisking, until it is hot. 
  2. Stir in the vanilla and serve.
  3. If you like it frothy, blend it in the blender.

5 Minute Vegan Hot Cocoa

All you need is five minutes

Ingredients

  • Almond milk
  • Semisweet Chocolate/Dark Chocolate
  • Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • Raw Sugar

Method

  1. Put all the ingredients in a coffee mug and microwave
  2. If you prefer the old-school way, add ingredients to a small saucepan, bring to a simmer and whisk away. 
  3. Add some extract like vanilla or peppermint to add a unique taste to your hot chocolate
  4. Serve with some coconut whipped cream on top – it adds an exquisite finishing touch 

Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate

Switch up your classic creamy hot chocolate with decadent caramel

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk, preferably whole
  • 1/4 – 1/2 cup bittersweet chocolate chips 
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce 
  • Sweetened whipped cream or vanilla marshmallows
  • Grated chocolate for garnish {optional}
  • Caramel Sauce

Method

  1. Gather your ingredients, including sugar, water, butter, and heavy cream. In a heavy-bottomed saucepan {something that isn’t dark on the bottom so you can see the shade of caramel}, heat sugar, salt, and water over medium-high heat constantly whisking to dissolve sugar.
  2. Once the mixture reaches a boil, stop whisking and allow the mixture to boil until it reaches a dark amber color, carefully swirling pan occasionally* {this will take time, so be patient}
  3. As soon as the mixture reaches a dark amber color, immediately add butter and whisk until butter has melted then immediately remove from heat.
  4. Carefully pour in the cream and immediately whisk with a long-handled whisk to combine (it will bubble vigorously). Whisk until the mixture is smooth. Pour caramel into a glass jar to cool.
  5. Now for the hot chocolate, heat milk in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Once the milk is warm, stir in chocolate chips and caramel and cook regularly whisking until the chocolate has melted. 
  6. Allow to cool slightly and serve warm topped, topped with sweetened whipped cream or miniature marshmallows, drizzle each serving with 1 Tbsp caramel sauce and garnish with grated chocolate if desired. For a creamier hot chocolate, you can use up to 1/2 cup bittersweet chocolate chips and mix in more caramel sauce as well if desired.

Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate

All you need is a blender to create a delicious hot chocolate that packs a serious peanut-butter punch.

Ingredients 

  • 1-1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cups semisweet chocolate morsels
  • 1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1 cup cold heavy whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon Truvia sweetener OR 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons melted peanut butter

Method

  1. Add milk, chocolate morsels, and peanut butter into your high-speed blender till the mixture is hot and bubbly.
  2. Pour hot chocolate into two mugs.
  3. While your hot chocolate is processing, make whipped cream.
  4. In the bowl of an electric mixer, add whipping cream and sweetener. Whip until the mixture has reached soft peaks.
  5. Top hot chocolate with an equal amount of whipped cream and drizzle on chocolate syrup and melted peanut butter.

Notes: If you do not own a high powered blender, add all hot chocolate ingredients to a small saucepan and warm on the stove over medium heat until hot and creamy.

Red Wine Hot Chocolate

Your happy hours will get a whole lot cozier with this adult twist on a childhood classic.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup red wine
  • 1/3 cup dark chocolate chunks

Method

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine milk and chocolate chips. 
  2. Keep whisking until chocolate is melted into milk and you have a thick and creamy chocolate milk. 
  3. Pour in red wine and heat until everything is hot. 
  4. Pour into two mugs or 6-8 smaller glasses.

This drink is quite rich, so serve in smaller glasses for sipping.
