Tying The Knot? Consider These Offbeat Wedding Destinations

A picturesque backdrop can do to a wedding what spandex can do for a little black dress. Forgive our crude usage of words, but we were trying to make a point. In all seriousness, though, a beautiful wedding venue can take your wedding ceremony up by several notches and give you memories that are not only beautiful but a treat to the eyes as well. After all, you get married only once. Hopefully.

And so here’s our list of wedding destinations that are not just gorgeous but also not so mainstream – to make your wedding an affair people are going to be talking about for a long time.

Alibaug, Maharashtra

A coastal town located about 120 km away from South Mumbai, Alibaug is perfect for someone who wants a destination wedding that’s closer home yet away from the hustle-bustle of the city.

The best part – you can start your wedding celebrations on your way to Alibaug by hopping on to a ferry with your friends and family! Alibaug houses beautiful resorts and beaches for that desi destination wedding you’ve always wanted. You can also book a Zoomcar, if you wish to travel by road – the journey takes around three hours, depending on traffic.

Havelock Islands, Andaman

With pristine beaches, turquoise waters, and tall palm trees, the Andaman Islands provide an excellent backdrop for an intimate wedding with only the closest of friends, family, and the endless blue skies for the company.

The atmosphere is super relaxed, so if you’re looking for a laidback wedding that’s simple and sans the fuss, Havelock Islands will be a great choice.

Guide – There are direct flights to Port Blair only from Kolkata and Chennai, and flights from any other Indian city includes a stop in one of these two cities. From Port Blair, an approximate 3-hr ferry ride takes you to Havelock.

Florence, Italy

Florence is a city steeped in beauty, art, culture, and architecture. We’d recommend spending a few days soaking in the town before you tie the knot at one of several stone palaces or even churches {look for venues with the quintessential frescoed ceilings for that bit of added charm}. This one’s going to be a luxurious affair, so bring in the pastel color scheme, Tuscan cuisine, and luscious wines.

Guide – Flight tickets from India to Florence start at INR 41,761 and you can book tickets here.

Greece, Santorini

For breath-taking sunset weddings, head to Greece. You can hold your wedding ceremony at the edge of the Caldera (a cauldron-like volcanic depression), by the pool, in a restaurant, or even at the beach. Trust the simplicity of whitewashed houses interspersed with cobalt blue roofs, skies, and waters to offer an ambience that you’ll find nowhere else in the world.

Want to be a little extra? Hire a sailing boat or yacht for your private wedding sail with your to-be spouse and guests and leave the world behind, even if it’s for a little while.

Paro, Bhutan

If you wish to go offbeat, a wedding in Bhutan is going to fit the brief well! As a country that has been ranked as the happiest country in Asia and among the happiest in the world, Bhutan would be an ideal place to start the new phase of your life. With Buddhist temples, beautiful monasteries, gushing rivers, lovely valleys, and stunning forts, Paro in Bhutan is as gorgeous as it gets.

PS: We think the stunning backdrop of the Tibetan culture of Bhutan will do justice to the classic red Indian wedding lehenga/saree.

Guide – The flight frequency between Mumbai and Paro is pretty limited. There are only two flights every week and they cost around INR 48,972 – book here.

Chiang Mai, Thailand

If you’re looking for a destination wedding that is not too heavy on the pockets, Thailand is a great option. But places like Bangkok, Krabi, Pattaya, and Phuket are way too commercial and crowded, so we suggest heading to Chiang Mai.

Whether you’re looking for a riverside location, a beach-front property, or just a quaint, quiet but beautiful spot where you can have a traditional ceremony without much hassle, you can find it all here.

Guide – The journey between Thailand and Mumbai can be completed in around 4 hours and flight prices start at INR 16,515. Book here.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is arguably one of the most charming and vibrant cities in Europe. With a contemporary culture that’s alive and thriving, Lisbon embraces its heritage, yet has a welcoming & liberal atmosphere.

Lisbon has a wide variety of activities suitable for every age range – beaches, nightlife, culture walks, zoos, restaurants. So apart from having your wedding ceremony at a super chic location, you can also count on your friends and family having a time of their lives doing the things they love and getting a holiday they very much deserve.

Guide – Flight tickets between Mumbai and Portugal start at INR 42,447 – book here.
