Apart from being a contemporary centre of arts & culture in Eastern Europe, Budapest is also one of the most continuously inhabited cities in all of Europe, with roots going as far back as Celtic settlers back in the 9th century. It also served as the capital of the mighty Austro-Hungarian Empire, once one of the biggest empires in the world. So, there’s a lot of backstories to uncover here, as long as you go with enough time on your hands.

With a city as big and diverse as Budapest, what all you can do, there is entirely dependent on your taste. For those into nightlife, there are plenty of local bars and clubs to keep you busy, along with a chance to meet other people from around the world doing the same thing.

For the history and architecture lovers, the city boasts of a mixed heritage of cultures from all around the nearby region. We’d recommend checking out the various Turkish baths in the town, the biggest one being Széchenyi baths with around 21 pools. However, if you can manage it, they’re better visited during the winters, when a hot water bath is more needed than around this time.

There are plenty of things to do for the idyllic traveller who doesn’t want to do much other than laze about, as well. Go for one of the many guided walk tours of the city or take a cruise on the Danube on a particularly calm day. It’s also a great city for nature lovers, as there are nature walks and caves to explore throughout the city.

Again, there are a plethora of things you can do while you’re in Budapest, and precisely what they will depend on personal preference and taste.

1. Orientation

One of Europe’s most exciting capital, Hungary is a treasure trove of monuments, ancient ruins, medieval townhouses, and neoclassical buildings. From castle hopping to shopping to relaxing in the hot springs, there are many ways in which you can explore this city. If you are planning a trip in the coming days, make sure you stay for at least a week, so that you explore the city at a pace that is not too hurried.

2. Best time to visit

While it’s a great city to visit throughout the year, if you’re into meeting people and seeing the best of what the city has to offer, head there any time between May and August.

Getting Around – The best way to travel in the city is on foot. If however you are in a hurry and feel too tired to walk around, the city has a very good transportation system with four metro lines and an extensive network of trams and buses. You can either buy a single ticket or have a travel card if you are staying for a longer duration.

3. Travel Expenses

Budapest is not a very expensive country. However, since you are travelling for at least a week, it is important to decide your finances beforehand. In case you are travelling solo, for a week you might need anything between INR 43,000-50,000 {includes food & drinks, transport and stay}.

On the other hand, if you are travelling as a couple, your expenses for a week might be anywhere between INR 85,000 – 90,000 {includes food & drinks, transport and stay}. Also, make sure you book your tickets before, as last-minute tickets can prove to be quite expensive.
