5 Best Ways To Travel Virtually Around The World

Among the many things that 2020 put on hold, jetting off to a new destination was one that hit the hardest, especially for frequent travellers. Holed in our homes, with lockdowns becoming the new norm and the idea of lazing off in exotic locations became a thing of the past. This is where technology and ardent travellers came to our rescue as museums, hotels, and amusement parks all over the world opened their doorway to virtual reality.

Given the current travelling situation, which is more or less for emergencies only, it became paramount to travel the world however one could. With VR headsets and apps transforming our phones into something that could provide an immersive experience, VR travel is here to stay, in some form, even when the pandemic is way behind us.

How virtual travel suits us?

In an ideal scenario, like pre-Covid, of course, we would want to visit the place and use all our senses to immerse ourselves in an experience of a lifetime – because that is what travel the world means to everyone. However, when a virus is looming over our head and countries being shut down because of a second or even third wave, travel virtually is our best and safest option. Whether you do it with online portals of different museums and your VR headsets or read a book and watch a movie, it is up to you.

1. Travel To Art Galleries and Museums Virtually

Nothing beats the experience of actually visiting the calm spaces of a museum and art galleries and if you are missing all of that, take a virtual tour to your favourite museum anywhere in the world. With virtual travel, you can get inspired and learn more about history and your favourite destinations. Some of the museums and historical sites that have opened their doors virtually to the world are Van Gogh Museum, Buckingham Palace, National Gallery, Anne Frank Museum, Machu Pichu, Louvre, Metropolitan Museum and National Gallery of Art among others.

2. Read Travel Books and Travelogues

Travel online is all about immersing yourself in the experience virtually and what better means of transportation to another world than books? For as long as one can remember, books have been our unique portal to another realm, world, country or even timeline depending on which one is being read. You can either go for hard-core travel books like ‘On The Road’ by Jack Kerouac or travelogues of Paul Theroux. There is also the classic ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ by Elizabeth Gilbert and many such books that have the power to transport you to a different world altogether. Much needed when you are stuck indoors!

3. Attend Masterclasses and Online Workshops

Virtual Meetups are another way to bond with fellow travellers and like-minded people. From attending travel writing workshops or something that educates you on the basics of hiking or even learning how to make pasta from an Italian chef – there are multiple classes/sessions that you can take online. You can do all this today, thanks to online courses, masterclasses, and just random travel communities you can find online.

In this weird year of social distancing, hanging out virtually with strangers and peers, both might be the thing you need. Try this out. You can find courses on Udemy, Coursera and many other platforms.

4. Watch Travel Shows and Movies

Travel Vlogs are a hit for a lot of reasons but have found more traction in this pandemic. With people holed indoors and yearning to drive through tea plantations or gaze into a star-studded sky, time-lapses, and montages of your favourite destinations are coming in pretty handy right now. Follow your favourite travel bloggers’ past such vlogs and live through different cities every day. You can even plan your future trips based on such vlogs. I know I do.

Apart from these virtual travel experience tricks, you can always take a walk down the memory lane and relive your travels with hundreds of photos and videos you might have taken. Plus, you can always plan for the next big trip to that place you have always wanted to go, whenever we do open and return to our travel ‘normal’.

Till then, keep travelling virtually!
